Parent’s matter for Talented Teens

What does it take to be a success?

Zoe Bestel describes herself as “a  14 yr old Singer/Songwriter armed with a pen, paper and a trusty ukulele.” She is much more then that let me tell you :-) So how did a girls from the remote  Dumfries & Galloway which is South West Scotland get her own record deal at 14?

How did you start doing what you do?
I’ve been singing since before I could talk. I started playing instruments when I moved up to Scotland aged 8. I play: piano, flute, oboe, recorder and a little bit of guitar – but it all started for me really when I picked up the ukulele last January. I heard a song I liked with a ukulele riff in and I thought I’d love to learn that and it just went from there. I started learning everything I could and then I began to write my own stuff. In the June I got my first gig.

Who supported you along the way?

My parents and my really close friends and all the local people who stop me in the street and tell me how proud they are of me.

What were the high points?

Getting my record deal. Going in the studio. Meeting all these fantastic musicians. Making my video and getting asked to play at The Wickerman Festival.

What were the low points?

Sometimes it can feel a bit lonely. It would probably be a bit more fun if I were in a band. I want to share the exciting journey with my friends and don’t want them to feel left out when something exciting happens.

Celebrity News: Cher Lloyd reveals the full extent of cyber bullying

Celebrities and Cyber Bullying

Cher Lloyd has revelaed she faces daily bullying from online cyber haters who have branded her a ‘dirty pikey’.

‘I must get at least ten tweets a day saying I’m a dirty pikey. I think they know it’s going to get to me, or because they know they can”. ’There have been many times when I’ve cried myself to sleep. I’m very scared because I like to think  people think I’m strong, because if they don’t, then they might not think I can do it… Some days I wish that people would leave me alone for a bit and for there to be a hole to suck me in.’

The X Factor star, 18, went in front of the cameras to feature on Panorama documentary, lifting the lid on cruel and relentless internet bullying largely carried out via Facebook and Twitter. Speaking on the BBC One show, the Swagger Jagger star said she frequently cries herself to sleep. Her twisted tormentors have also attacked her mother Diane, due to her Romany heritage.

’I never thought I could talk to anybody about it because I didn’t feel I needed to as I was strong enough to get through it alone, but that’s the worst thing you can do.’

Cher also said she would be a lot happier if she had catapulted to fame a decade ago when the Internet was left prevalent: ‘I’d be a lot happier and be protected a lot more.’

I have heard many mixed reviews on this topic with some saying that she “deserves it because she is famous” . I think it is so sad to say that celebrities are asking for it because they are in the limelight. Yes, sure you have to take the good and bad as a celebrity (and people will say bad things) but to be subjected to this kind of bullying is horrific. I guess it is a fine balance to be there for the fans and ignore the “haters” . I wish our young celebrities were protected more. To think our young stars are crying themselves to sleep is unacceptable.

We need to do more. Thank you Cher for speaking out.
